At Nikhef, approximately 190 physicists and 75 technical staff members work together in an open and international scientific environment. Together, they perform theoretical and experimental research in the fields of particle and astroparticle physics. The Nikhef institute is a collaboration between six major Dutch universities and the Dutch Foundation for Scientific Research (NWO). Among the research collaborations Nikhef participates in are the ATLAS, LHCb and ALICE experiments at CERN, the KM3NeT neutrino telescope in the Mediterranean, the VIRGO interferometer in Pisa, the Xenon-nT dark matter experiment in Gran Sasso, the Pierre Auger cosmic ray observatory in Argentina and the eEDM research programme in Groningen. There are also scientific groups on Physics Data Processing and detector R&D. In close collaboration with the experimental groups, the Nikhef Theoretical Physics group plays an important role in the Nikhef research portfolio. The group consists of 16 senior staff members, mainly affiliated to Nikhef partner universities, and currently hosts 17 PhD students and postdocs. The position The successful candidate is expected to have an outstanding track record of creative and original contributions in theoretical particle physics. Specific research topics relevant for this position include, but are not limited to, precision calculations of observables in the Standard Model and possible extensions, collider physics, quantum chromodynamics, flavour physics and model building. It is foreseen that the candidate will establish links with the experimental research portfolio of Nikhef, will play a leading role in the scientific staff and will actively contribute to funding efforts. Nikhef with its University partners offers teaching opportunities and excellent access to students, which play an important role in the scientific life of the theory group and Nikhef.
